Tending to the Heart:

Heart Spirit (神 Shen) & Summer in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Summer is the season of the Heart and the Shen (神), the spirit that lives in the Heart and governs joy, clarity, and connection. Summer is the most Yang of all seasons ~ meaning hot, bright, expressive, and full of outward motion.

When heat rises unchecked, the spirit can become unsettled manifesting in irritability, restless sleep, overexcitement, emotional overwhelm.

Summer balance means nourishing the Heart, calming the mind, and aligning with natural rhythms. Some simple rituals to support the Shen:

• Morning tea in silence

• A few deep breaths between tasks

• Choosing ease over urgency
